Events
Wow. A lot of events I didn't know even though in my life a couple times I've done those "on the day you were born" trivia thingies. Only three? okay:
-1252 - Pope Innocent IV issues the papal bull ad exstirpanda, which authorizes the torture of heretics in the Medieval Inquisition. Torture quickly gains widespread usage across Catholic Europe.
-1869 - Woman's suffrage: In New York, Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton form the National Woman Suffrage Association.
-1964 - The Smothers Brothers give their first concert in Carnegie Hall in New York City.
Birthdays
-1856 - L. Frank Baum, American author (d. 1919)
-1905 - Joseph Cotten, American actor (d. 1994)
Deaths
-1886 - Emily Dickinson, American poet (b. 1830)
And so that you may easily skip if you don't like stories about children:
Yesterday was a big day for Victoria. First she had an Easter Egg Hunt at her pre-school, then she had her birthday party and later we took her to my niece's Black Belt Extravaganza.
Easter Egg Hunt
Poor kid seems to have my luck. So, We are hunting around and gathering all the toys and gifts set out for the kids (bubbles, chalk, pinwheel, plastic candy-filled eggs, hard boiled eggs) and when she has everything including all six plastic eggs with her name and we still haven't found any hard-boiled ones, I go to her teacher and point out the logistical problem with her finding that many items, but still not coming across a single one of her dyed eggs. Well, teacher goes into the house to see if they've been missed. All the kids are leaving. Miss V's daughter comes out and says "Why don't you look in the backyard one more time?" so we take her back there... so that a couple minutes later the daughter and her friend can come in back and say "OH! We found them! They're in front." So we take her back to the front yard and let her collect her eggs all by her lonesome little self!
Punchline: On rare occasions when necessary for my sanity I trick Victoria and every time she gives me this unique expression. She gave all of us that look yesterday and I swear it says "I know that you just tricked me, but I can't prove it. I swear, one day I will prove it and then you're going to jail. That's all there is to it." Okay, maybe it doesn't say all that, but it is a priceless look of "Hello, I'm not stupid!" but she doesn't ever say anything.
Birthday Party
This turned out pretty great actually, though 7 5-year-olds and glitter? Well, let's just say next time I'll have a vacuum handy and I'll splurge on extra glitter. Should have bought glitter glue, in fact! DUH!
semi-circle, will come back to party again
Okay, so my friend...we were really close in high school, but when she moved to Vegas, we lost touch. Well, she moved back here a year or so ago with her husband and kids. It happened that she went to church with my sister's friend so when they got talking and learned of each other's schools and friends, A- asked my sister's friend to get us hooked up. Since then, we have caught up. Her son is about 3. Last week we had dinner there and her son PJ followed Victoria everywhere... to the point where V started to get frustrated by him. Well, according to A, this little 3-year-old has a thing for red-heads because there is a girl in day care he loves too.
and we're back
Anyway, he got her a lovely present for her birthday, but in addition he made his mom buy a bouquet of flowers (which he picked out). Apparently his dad had brought flowers to A- and he wanted to show V that he loves her the same. As if that's not cute enough, after the party V asked me if she had to marry PJ because he brought her flowers!
Dose of Sweetness
At least 4 times after her party yesterday, V told me how much fun she had and how much she loved it. I felt really good because I worked hard to make it a lovely day for her.
Karate
I really wanted to take her to the Black Belt Extravaganza because, even though it's a different school, I wanted her to have an idea of what she's working toward. Well, she loved it. She thought it was quite awesome as they displayed some of their skills. Later she was getting bored, but it was also past her bedtime so I think she was having trouble focusing anyway. We took her out into the hall to let her play, but instead she started practicing her own karate to the music... I thought it was cute. Anyway, we ran back in when my niece came on. Awesome, J!! (that was us screaming from the back of the auditorium every time you appeared...)
Then we had to run right after because even though it was close to over, we really needed to get the kid to bed. She was exhausted, but by the time we got her fed and ready for bed, it was so far beyond bedtime that I wondered if we should have just stayed and bought fast food on the way home. Ah well.
Last night. Oy. Erm, go back. Thursday night we stayed up really late decorating for party on Saturday. Then I had to get up early on Friday. Friday night = neighbours = loud party. Saturday, up kind of early to take to egg hunt. Last night you can imagine how ready I was to crash!
Well, no. Instead I got sick. I don't know what! I hurt so bad I couldn't sleep or even lay down...or stand...or walk. Dunno. Never felt such pain so I got out of bed and tried to distract myself a million ways. The pain was worse than when you feel like food poisoning, but it was different which is why I don't know what it was and probably why I didn't get sick in that way. Still, very weird. I told myself if that ever happens again I'm calling a doctor. Finally subsided at 3 am, so I went to bed. I'm still at a loss to explain as I feel just fine today. Couldn't sleep after 8:30 this morning for no good reason. Bah. Maybe I'll get a chance to nap later.
P.S.
-1858 - The third Royal Opera House officially opens in London.
-1905 - Las Vegas, Nevada, is founded when 110 acres (0.4 km²), in what later would become downtown, are auctioned off.
-1932 - The May 15 Incident. In an attempted coup the Prime Minister of Japan Inukai Tsuyoshi is killed.
-1940 - Nylon stockings go on sale for the first time in the United States.
-1991 - Edith Cresson becomes France's first female prime minister.
-2004 - The largest known prime number at the time of its discovery, 224036583 − 1, is found by Josh Findley and the GIMPS collaborative effort.
(births)
-1859 - Pierre Curie, French physicist, Nobel Prize laureate (d. 1906)
-1948 - Brian Eno, English musician and record producer
I could have sworn that a serial killer was caught, trial began, or something significant on the exact day I was born. Hmm, maybe I was wrong.
