Sunday turned out to be the Thanksgiving I wanted. Invited over some friends/family members to a quiet, nice meal where we talked about real things. Afterward, we had some good conversation and fun, then we all watch QaF. Much more relaxing and without the crap factor. Lovely.
Monday was sister's birthday. For her big three oh, she wanted to go to a museum and have Chinese for dinner. So, in the morning I went with her to an exhibit they're having at BYU. It's called Empire of the Sultans and features Ottoman art from the Khalili Collection. Everything was gorgeous. I'm a big fan of Persian art and because that was a big influence on Ottoman Art of that period, I found everything fascinating.
Several things got me thinking, though, about this movie so I'm going to mention it here. The Pillow Book. First of all, Ottoman Art is mainly based around the art of calligraphy. The point of writing calligraphy as an art form was one of my favourite points in that movie. I'd discussed that whole Japanese calligraphy/art with a teacher once and the subject always interested me so when it was in the movie it caught my attention and then at the exhibit, it reminded me.
Then there was this shirt. A wife made it for her husband to wear into battle, saying the prayers she wrote on it would protect him. The thing was covered in writing and looked oddly like tanned skin. I don't want to spoil anything for those who haven't seen the movie and wish to so we'll just leave it at that.
After the Ottoman exhibit, we toured the three free exhibits they had going. Local artists, permanent collections, and a gallery of art from Jerusalem were free. In one, an artist had painted on goat skin. This also made me think of the movie. It was actually rather weird.
Anyway, last night we went to Chinese with her for dinner. Mom and Dad also came and it was another nice evening. Ah. It was a sigh of relief after last week, yesterday afternoon, and anticipation of what I have to do today...
